WHAT IS THE BREAKING BARRIERS ACADEMY?

Sport keeps us fit, mindful and brings us together. It allows us to connect across gender, race, class, and religious differences. But unfortunately, access to sport is not equal. Work still needs to be done to break down barriers to allow women and girls to fully participate and reach their full potential. That’s why we created The Breaking Barriers Academy - an online educational platform providing content, activities, and tools to help you take the first step towards creating a more inclusive and gender equitable space for all.

Examine the different ways to create an environment at your organization, team, or company that embraces unique ideas, perspectives, experiences, and people. This track is open to all but will be most useful for staff, employees, and volunteers within sports organizations, teams, and brands.

EQUALITY

Equality means that all people deserve to have the same rights, resources, and opportunities. It is built on the assumption that everyone benefits from the same support. Equality only works if everyone begins from the same starting line and has the same needs to rise to the equal footing as their peers.

EQUITY

Equity means recognizing that each person has different needs and access to power, which should be addressed in a way that rectifies imbalances for everyone to reach equal footing. For example, one group may need more support than another to bring them all up to equal standing. 

SOCIAL JUSTICE

When systems are corrected and adjusted to offer every person the same benefits, consequences, and resources in society, equitable access is established. Social justice embodies a vision of an equitable society where all members are physically, socially, and psychologically safe.

OUR JOURNEY

This platform provides methodologies and tools to embark on a self-reflection journey. We cannot certify that learners who complete the whole course will become experts on achieving gender equity through sports. Instead, this platform should be used as a trigger to create more gender-inclusive practices and should be accompanied by practical and individual work in your organizations and/or on the playing field. 

Finally, we are aware that gender-equitable practices vary according to the context. There are different tools and methodologies to use to achieve gender equity in the areas this platform focuses on. Therefore, the content here should be used for inspiration and should be adapted, if possible, to your own reality and needs.
